Christian & Barton, L.L.P., maintains a broad-based civil practice, serving clients throughout the United States. Our offices are located in Richmond, the capital of Virginia. Our clients range from Fortune 500 companies to closely-held businesses, and include governmental entities, nonprofit organizations and individuals. Many firm clients are entrepreneurs engaged in high technology businesses, real estate ventures and expanding professional groups. Others engage in banking, communications, health care, insurance and transportation.
One of Virginia’s foremost firms, Christian & Barton traces its origins to 1926, when Andrew Christian and Robert Barton established a law practice to provide legal services at competitive rates while maintaining the highest professional standards. We strive to maintain these traditions while evolving to meet the needs of our clients.
Christian & Barton tailors its services to respond to a client’s particular needs. We understand that clients place high value on clear communication, practical advice and cost-effective outcomes. To achieve these objectives, we typically place responsibility for a client with a primary attorney who oversees communication with the client and coordinates other lawyers who bring their specialized skill and experience to the assignment. We encourage frequent client contact and full client participation in decision making, seeking to ensure that our activities are driven toward outcomes that meet the client’s stated needs.
To maintain our commitment to client service, we recruit candidates from highly regarded law schools who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and community involvement. Prior to joining the firm, many lawyers serve as judicial clerks in state or federal courts. We also recruit experienced practitioners who strengthen the firm’s expertise in specialized areas.
In addition to seeking talented professionals, Christian & Barton fosters and relies on a collegial atmosphere that enhances the professional development of our lawyers. This emphasis on collaboration carries over to client service. Our lawyers are encouraged to continue their development once they are in practice. In addition to publishing on various legal topics, Christian & Barton lawyers often serve as faculty for continuing legal education programs and adjunct faculty at law schools.
We encourage civic and professional engagement by our attorneys. Christian & Barton lawyers have served as officers of the American Bar Association, the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Bar Association, the Bar Association of the City of Richmond, the Virginia Law Foundation, the Old Dominion Bar Association and the American College of Trial Lawyers. Five Christian & Barton lawyers have served as president of the Virginia State Bar, three have served as president of the Virginia Bar Association and five have served as president of the Bar Association of the City of Richmond. Our attorneys have been recognized for extraordinary contributions to the legal community, including receipt of the Bar Association of the City of Richmond’s Hunter W. Martin Professionalism Award; the Virginia Bar Association’s William B. Spong Award; and the Virginia State Bar’s Lewis F. Powell Jr. Pro Bono Award, the highest recognition for pro bono legal service in Virginia.
